When looking for the best trucking companies to work for, it’s absolutely critical that you spend a lot of time doing your research and talking to people who are actually truckers. A lot of people fail to do that last part and they end up working for some fly by night outfit that gives them lousy routes and horrible pay. It’s been well known for years that the trucking industry has a desperate need for drivers. I’ve been reading the stories for years, and that was before I started working for a company after I got my CDL license.
I’ve got a great job with a massive retail operation where I drive a dedicated route, get high wages and great insurance, and even better I’m home most nights with my family. Occasionally bad weather will leave me stranded somewhere, but I’m almost always home at a reasonable hour. This is not the case for most people in the industry. Most people go into over the road trucking and that’s where you sleep in the cab and have to sit around for hours not getting paid while waiting for someone to unload your trailer. Don’t end up like those guys if at a possible.
Still, I know more than a few guys who like that type of work. They like the adventure of the road (and it is an adventure both good and bad), and some of them don’t even mind unloading their own cargo for the extra pay. Even then you’ve got to make sure you work for one of the better companies. Even over the road can pay very well with great benefits if you do your homework. So if you want to get out there and drive, read up online and talk to a trucker. Get out there and be safe!
